PRISM TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, MILWAUKEE PUBLIC SCHOOLS & LOCAL PARTNERS ENCOURAGE GIRLS TO DISCOVER ENGINEERING DURING NATIONAL ENGINEERING WEEK
Community Service Event to Promote Girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fields
(Milwaukee, WI)--(February 20, 2017)-- In celebration of National Engineering Week, Prism Technical and Grandesco Solutions partnered with Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Milwaukee Public Schools, American Transmission Company, Mortenson, We Energies, HNTB and JF Ahern to host the 5th Annual Girl Day…Every Girl is a Rockstar. Girl Day will consisted of 200+ fifth through eighth grade female students viewing the movie, Hidden Figures, followed by a rocket launch activity. This event was used to motivate and inspire pre-college students who might otherwise never consider a STEM related career path to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The capacity filled event will take place at Majestic Cinema of Brookfield, WI on Thursday, February 23, 2017.
During the first year, thirty students participated in Girl Day from one school; however, due to positive feedback from those present, and subsequent high demand, nine different middle schools with over 200 girls will convergee at North Division to be introduced to the world of engineering and possibilities at the event this year! More than 20 female engineers will be on hand to speak about their exciting careers in engineering, what it took to get where they are today and mingle with participants.
Research shows that girls and young women lose interest in subjects and the fields of study leading to engineering careers long before they enter college. Girl Day will expose girls to dynamic women engineers and show them that they can pursue career paths in science and engineering no matter their circumstance, background, gender or heritage.
