Girl Day 2015

3rd Annual "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day"

Prism Technical Institute (Prism) in collaboration with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) hosted the third annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” (Girl Day) on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at North Division High School located in Milwaukee, WI. Girl Day 2015 was made possible through generous monetary donations from Brown and Caldwell, We Energies, Mortenson Construction, CG Schmidt, JF Ahern, Co. and HNTB. Prism, MPS, Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), GRAEF, The Sigma Group, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and the American Transmission Company supported Girl Day 2015 with in-kind contributions for the event. Representatives from Zoe Engineering, Fedex, GE Healthcare, Rockwell Automation and AECOM hosted hands-on activities as well as volunteered throughout the day.

GIRL ENGINEERS ROCK!

Daphne Wilson of Zoe Engineering started the day off by leading a panel of awesome engineers from local companies. Viki Streich of HNTB, Frances Hardrick of We Energies, Veronica Loete of Brown and Caldwell, Dinah Gant of GG Diversified, LLC, and Kathleen Vignali of Mortenson Construction spoke about their exciting careers in engineering. Daphne kept the girls engaged while telling of her experiences as an engineer entrepreneur and engaging the panelists to share their insights.

MEET ARIEL

Take a moment listen to Ariel’s video posted on DiscoverE.org! She wants you to know that engineering is creative field, full of wonderful possibilities and options. Ariel is an engineering undergraduate who is excited about where engineering will take her.

GIRLS CAN DO ANYTHING!

Research shows that girls and young women lose interest in subjects and the fields of study leading to engineering careers long before they enter college. Girl Day combats this by exposing girls to dynamic women engineers and showing them that they can pursue career paths in science and engineering no matter their circumstance, background, gender or heritage.

After the panel concluded the girls participated in 3 forty minute engineering activities hosted by representatives from local companies. The activities included: Making Stuff Safer, hosted by HNTB; Marble Ride, hosted by American Transmission Co. and Brown and Caldwell; Silver Streak, hosted by AECOM and The Sigma Group; What is GIS, hosted by MMSD; Rubberband Car, hosted by Fedex and GE Healthcare; Curious George, hosted by Rockwell Automation; Bristle Bots, hosted by American Transmission Co., Mortenson Construction and We Energies; and Hovercraft hosted by Prism and MSOE.

UNTIL NEXT YEAR...

Once Girl Day Activities concluded, the girls had lunch provided by MPS and talked about what they learned. They also received a special gift bag from Brown and Caldwell that included keepsakes from participating companies, as well as an engineering activity book donated by the MSOE to encourage the continued exploration of engineering and science.
