Girl Day 2016

IT's GIRL DAY!

In celebration of National Engineering Week, Grandesco Solutions, Inc. a non-profit arm of Prism Technical hosted its 4th Annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” (Girl Day) on Thursday, February 25, 2016. 198 girls from 11 Milwaukee Public Schools were introduced to the world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).The day began with five dynamic practicing women engineers speaking about their exciting careers, what it took to get where they are today and, sharing advice and encouragement with the girls. The panel concluded with many great questions from those in the audience!

Panelists: Daphne Wilson, Zoe Engineering; Siba Rahman, City of Milwaukee DPW; Nahid Afsari, Cotter Consulting; Anna Kaas, American Transmission Company; and Amanda Dagens, American Transmission Company.



GIRL DAY 2016 SPONSORS

Girl Day 2016 was made possible through generous monetary donations from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, American Transmission Co., We Energies, Mortenson Construction, JF Ahern, Co. and HNTB. Prism Technical, MPS, Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) supported Girl Day 2016 with in-kind contributions for the event. Representatives from Zoe Engineering, City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) hosted hands-on activities as well as volunteered throughout the day.

Mayor Tom Barrett stopped in to discuss the importance of women in engineering and to motivate the students in attendance to pursue jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.



GIRLS CAN DO ANYTHING!

After the panel concluded the girls participated in 3 forty minute engineering activities hosted by representatives from local companies. The activities included: Bristle Bots hosted by American Transmission Co.; Build it Up hosted by Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation; Build a Glow Stick hosted by the City of Milwaukee; What is GIS hosted by MMSD; Rubberband Car hosted by JF Ahern; Spaghetti Bridge hosted by Mortenson Construction; and Marble Ride hosted by 10th grade students from Milwaukee School of Languages who are Archonettes (youth group) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.



Once Girl Day Activities concluded, the girls had lunch provided by MPS and talked about what they learned. They also received a special gift bag from JF Ahern that included keepsakes from participating companies, as well as an engineering activity book donated by the MSOE and “Is There an Engineer Inside You?” donated by Engineering Education Service Center to encourage the continued exploration of engineering and science.
